I have a 9i installation on Redhat ES4, with 2GB RAM. A database has been created there and was supporting an client application on 4 desktops. Recently some OS settings were made probably, due to which the instance doesnot start now. I've been asked to troubleshoot this problem now, but I dont find proper backup of ORA init files.
The specific being thrown during startup is:
SQL> startup
ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
SQL> startup
ORA-24324: service handle not initialized
ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
SQL>
Broadcast message from root (console) (Fri Aug 8 14:53:22 2008):

The system is going down for reboot NOW!

Some websites have indicated that System memory allocation is the problem during mount stage. I tried changing some parameters like: "processses". However, no luck.

I feel some parameters (in the init file probably) need to be tuned. But cant figure out which ones and how.
Please help me out.

Did you set ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID?
Did you check trace files?

Regards
Michel

This is a partial trace file.
If you want help, don't hide information.

By the way, don't use root to manage Oracle.

Michel

It turns out to be a damp squib in the end-I'm now feeling that I scratched my head everywhere for such a thing:

Directory permissions were altered: no more owned by oracle user. This was causing the problem.

Pl. excuse me for posting such a query.
