Hello all,

I am trying to install oracle 11gR2 on Rhel5 which is on vmware but unable to pass the first step out of the 9 required for the installation when i run thr installer.

The whole interface just keeps blinking and on and off.
To the best of my knowledge I think I have all the parameters such as memory, swap space all right.
Please kindly send me a link on how to install 11gR2 or help me figure out what the problem is. I have been on it for 4days now. Thank you

Panam

Hi Blackswan,

Below is the url:

http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR1InstallationOnEnterpriseLinux4and5.php

It seems to be for 11gR1 but I followed it but changed the parameters to fit into 11gR2.

Thank you

Decent article, but please NOTE that it does not mention VM.
Oracle can be a challenge for some/many folks to complete a standard installation.
VM greatly complicates the whole process so You're On Your Own (YOYO)!

BlackSwan is right - please read Oracle Metalink Note# 249212.1. Basically, you are on your own. And - if you have any issues should you get it to work, you will need to prove that the problem still exists in a non-vmware environment on the same OS for Oracle to help you, or so the Metalink article states. Good luck! (Note that Oracle is supporting Oracle VM . . . . )

On the other hand "The whole interface just keeps blinking and on and off." Sounds more like a general problem in the VMWare setup than an problem with Oracle.

The first thing I would obviously do is have a look in the installer log file, if there are any errors.

Step 2 would be to "change the interface". When you have until now used the VMWare viewer use a more "normal" Xserver / Xclient setup, or vice versa.

I would open an SR with oracle, use a different interface as suggested above, or try installing on a non vmware machine. Are you trying to install rac by any chance? I would also refer to the install docs at docs.oracle.com and verify your prerequisites are correct.

The log you provided showed an issue with a java procedure not working as expected. This usually happens when your prerequisites are not correct. Again - go to docs.oracle.com and get the linux install guide. It is generic, but it tells you all of the things that need to be done to your linux installation before you attempt to install the oracle binaries. Again - installing on vmware is not something that oracle supports or even tests on. I am fairly sure you are missing some required linux packages to successfully install - double check that you have installed everything the docs say should be there. Also make sure you have created the necessary users and groups for your install. Setting the kernel parameters properly is also a must. All this is described in detail in the docs. Good luck!

Oh - one more thing. If you are installing 32-bit oracle then you should be running on a 32-bit os. If you are installing 64-bit, you need to be running a 64-bit os.

Hi mkounalis,

Thank you so much for the swift and kind suggestion.
I would try double check the setting and try it again tommorow after checking the link you suggested.

I really do appreciate the interpretation of the log file.

Thank you
