I just got a request to move a large ~1TB Oracle 8.1.7
Database from an HP to an IBM RS/6000.
At first they neglected to mention that architecture
issue.
They can't/won't give us enough downtime to do an export or run any of the flat-file extraction tools.
I said no problem, since they only mentioned the HP.
I said we can do a hot backup.
Keep all the redo logs applied to the target to keep
them synced up until we cut over.
Everyone agreed, we set up a schedule THEN they slipped
in the tiny HP9000 to IBM RS/6000 issue.

I think the fact we can't get a downtime window
precludes a good export or flat-file extraction.
That is how I'd usually deal with the architecture
issue.

Does anyone have a chart of binary data file compat.
between architectures.
As a general rule I'd not bet on it, but in the specific case of HP9000 to IBM RS/6K could I copy
the data files and have a functional cloned database?
ok, if not any other ideas?

What about RMAN, does it have any tricks for dealing
with type of situation?

Any other tools aside from the cheesy read a record
then insert a record tools which will not deal with
transactions and keeping the system consistent any
more than my current tools?

Hi,
Have you looked at using inc. backups with exp? Maybe this is a solution?

Mark - Sorry this isn't an answer to your question. rather a question to you, I'm in the process of evaluating migration from an IBM DB2 database to Oracle. Can you tell me why your company decided to move off Oracle ?

They aren't.
They are moving changing hardware only.
It is an ORACLE on HP to ORACLE on RS/6000 Migration.
