Well
Codd laid down the rules for RDBMS.. and Oracle was once boasting as the only db server which met more than 8..
But again, as time went by the role of RDBMS was not just managing data but also included high availability and zero data loss ..And also in due course, new concepts like DATAMARTS DATAMINES came integrated with OLAP Databases.
(Just to remind you any Warehousing projects stands off with 2nd normalized form whereas normal database application's standard requires 3rd (or more) normalization)
So codds rules are no more referred to be as the standard for DBMS and Oracle is competing high in market giving Object features in database + JVM + XML parser and what not!
